A wonderful project that sponsors other projects for the betterment of mankind, especiallly for human spirit,  is at

They blend the powers of technology (usually digital), entertainment, and design, with the volunteer sponsorship of people and corporationswilling to donate hefty amounts of money and time to create a better world.
A biannual conference (with a stiff fee to guarantee sponsors' dedication  :o) provides the opportunity to view project proposals. Proposals that do not win the TED sponsorship are often adopted by attendees to make sure those ideas are not lost.
