All I know now is too breath in through my nose and out through my mouth. I can get pretty relaxed doing this.

Anyone got tips to add onto this?

yes, put your attention on each muscle in your body, starting with the big toes on up. relax the tiny muscles, go up to the eyelids and notice facial tension and release, you should feel so relaxed by then that you could expand your awareness outward into the room.
:) try to keep any objectives in the background.

Do you not think meditation is a thing of the mind? Like i'll relax my body and relax each muscle, but in my mind i'll picture a flowering blossoming or music being played, etc, to take my mind away from the physical. (or expand my awareness into the room)

What do you think of this?

thats a good point about whether meditation is a thing of the mind or a thing of letting go of the mind, lol, certainly a subject of meditation!

Hi Seeker-
The basic idea with meditation is to obtain complete access to the operations of your mind. This begins with turning off the internal babble. As you breathe in and out, you might count, or you might prefer a more traditional syllable like Hing (in) and Sah (out). The point is to continue doing only this, nothing else. Eventually things will start to come into focus and the inner babble with end, thoughts will sort of drift away on their own, and you will find quietness.

There are a lot of excellent books on meditation - Patanjali' Yoga Sutras and the Hatha Yoga Pradipika are two classics, then there are a large number of guide books from Tibet. You might find those that deal with Dzogchen most useful, since there's very little formal stuff. The Dalai Lama wote one of these. The only problem is that Tibetan books are usually associated with a well developed philosophical tradition, which might be more easily handled by getting some of the very basic translations in which these are described.

Hello seeker:

I've had lots of experience with meditation, and I found what's most important is to try to come in touch with your true spirit self. You don't have to bring your mind to a halt in order to do this. It is better to come to the point where you realize that all of your thoughts and perceptions appear to you, a point of awareness that isn't limited by them.

Various other approaches will work. Your needs will probably change from day to day. Sometimes you might want to get in touch with the real you; sometimes you might want to check out how your mind works; sometimes you might want to tune into inner love, peace or happiness; sometimes you might want to reflect on a particular issue.

The key to success is to have an interest in what you're meditating on.

What's most important is to lose limiting ideas so you can abide as the spirit you are. Such an approach will bring lasting results. Such an approach isn't limited to seated meditation.
