Title: Robert A. Monroe
Post by augoeideian on Jul 18th, 2006 at 8:28am
i was going through my 'The Dictionary of the Esoteric' by Nevill Drury (gosh he goes on about the Golden Dawn in this dictionary, anyhow ..) and i came across the entry for Robert Monroe and would like to share it here if no-one has seen it;

Monroe, Robert A. (1915 - 1995)
American businessman who in 1958, began having out-of-the-body experiences.  One afternoon, while resting on the couch in his living room, Monroe felt a 'warm light' upon his body and began to 'vibrate' involuntarily.  Over the next few months Monroe noticed that he could move his fingertips when the vibrations began, and 'feel' things normally beyond his reach.  Later he discovered that he could project his total consciousness outside his physical body, although his first experience of such dissolution was accompanied by a feeling of panic and the thought that perhaps he had died.  Monroe later began to systemically explore the new faculty he had discovered, and subsequently identified three 'locales' that could be 'visited' in the dissociated state.

In Locale One, according to Monroe, time seemed to cease, and past and future co-existed with the feeling of 'now'.  In Locale Two, one's will and visual abilities seemed to be able to create thought-forms, which then became experientially real.  In Monroe's terms, 'to think something is to make it happen ..'.  Locale Three, meanwhile, had a time-warp dimension, which provided imagery inconsistent with modern science.

An account of Monroe's experiences, Journeys Out of the Body, was published with a foreword by the leading parapsychologist Charles Tart.  It remains one of the classic contemporary accounts of astral projection.
See also Fox, Oliver; Muldoon, Sylvan.

:) it was a pleasant surprise to read this.

There is a biography of Robert A. Monroe that is very good. It's called Catapult: The Biography of Robert A. Monroe.  Another book is coming out. This is from Frank DeMarco:

BTW, friends, you have a treat to look forward to. Ronald (“Russ”) Russell of TMI’s professional division, an old-time friend of Bob Monroe, a professional writer, editor of Using the Whole Brain and Focusing the Whole Brain (and about 15 other books in two countries) is finishing up writing his biography of Bob. This will be only the second RAM biography to be published, the first being the long-out-of-print Catapult, by Bayard Stockton, which came out in 1990.

Russ is supposed to submit his final draft in September, and it will be published by Hampton Roads (of course!) next Spring after editing by one of my very favorite people. I’ve already read the first draft, and Russ is such a good writer!

This, just to set you to slavering.

I'm already slavering. LOL

I might take an interest in reading more about him. I only had the one time experience of being fully awake and walking along I stepped out of my body for a moment. I had no vibes or anything but I was I guess you could say on a spiritual high. Thinking of things in a greater way. I also felt no pain.
I do know a wiccan that says she has traveled the heavens. I don't know if shes refering to out of body.

Marilyn:

Have you ever met Robert Monroe? I don't know if you were involved with TMI at the time.

Also, supposedly Rosalin Mcknight was going to come out with a third book. Do you know anything about it?

Albert, no I never met him in the physical but I have a few times in the non-physical.  I didn't go to TMI until September 2000 and he transitioned in 1995.

I heard from Rosie last month and she isn't working on her third book yet.  :(  Her ex-husband passed over this year and he was her editor so she said she'll sure miss him but I'm sure he'll help her from the other side.  She also wrote:

"I'm excited that Cosmic Journeys is going into a Japanese translation.  There are about three all Japanese Gateways every year now.  So, perhaps Laurie will let me attend those when my book comes out so that I can sign books.  Cosmic Journeys, as Laurie says, is the history of TMI.  So, that is the best book to translate.  So, pehaps when that reaches its ultimat success, Soul Journeys can be translated as well."

Eggshellseas,

I noticed that the Monroe Institute now includes a Shamanic Journey Workshop scheduled for December.  The description is; "Become a resource of experiential wisdom bothe for yourself and others by exploring traditions in expanded states of consciousness.  This workshop uses Hemi-Sync and multi-cultural Shamanic traditions to create a safe, step-by-step process of gathering personal power and exploring dreamtime". I know I love the hemi-sync tapes and reading about Shamans which I relate to Wicca.

Love, Jean :-*

Yes the shamans were supposed to be shape shifters wern't they or are we talking about the same kind of study? I remember reading about the shamans before.

I believe there are levels or focus levels of mind where average people  learn to shapeshift as consciousness is formless in its natural state.
I was an orb with I am consciousness once. I shapeshifted into a dog form to do a retrieval once. and I recall in Bruce's books a bit of shape shifting going on. Monroe too. I remember seeing one of my best friends as alpha female wolf spirit out there, like a natural and free wild spirit. she was like that in person too.
I'm not trying to get attention from you all by my stories...lol...I know they are not believable to some but I think its time we all found out who and what we are intrinsically as energy, as consciousness and we are so much more than we think we are in C1. Castaneda (spelling?) books point to our shamanic capabilities also.

blessings, alysia

I still wonder about the significance of the female lion in the reoccuring dream I had during my coma.  It was set in the interior of a house and I had the task of rearranging the space.  I suspect the house had more to do with the tv being on but the lion-wellll.  I take her as my totem as well as my protection during this difficult hospital stay till I find another possibility.  She sat with such dignity and always in front of the scene while my cat, Spirit sat in the back of the room in the same pose.  They never moved but by merely their presence, I felt soooo comforted.  Since these dreams and now that MI offers the Shaman workshop, I've become more interested in relating Shamanism to retreivals of the self.  It's funny my #2 son recommeded I rent Kingdom Hospital because of its mystical theme mixed with tradition medical stance.  Plus he's a Steven King fan.  I saw episode 1 last night and when the artist victim of a hit and run started interacting with the Aardvark he had formally captured on canvas, it reminded me of my lion.

Augoeideian,

Really enjoyed the description of Monroe and I too look for references to Monroes work in books I most value.  This is why I was so thrilled when I discovered that the 3 most influential people in my life, Carl Rogers, Thomas Gordon, and Monroe all knew each other, respected each other and were friends. I didn't discover this until I had to do a talk for one of classes about 5 years ago.  I started working with Roger's and Gordon's material in the 70's and Monroe/Moen books etc. in the 90's.  But they all came together for me by '01.  All four have greatly influenced my beliefs, values, and the way I like to work with others. For me their the bottom line and the how to's regarding how to be an effective human.

Love to all, Jean  :-*

Jean

How is it that Monroe knew Carl Rogers??? That is a very strange coincidence!

I once read alot of Joseph Chilton Pearce. Imagine my surprise to learn that he and Monroe were friends...there is somethign about his buying a piece of land from Monroe and living there.

Maybe once you get to a certain level of notoriety there are people you just get thrown in with....

or maybe they all knew each other ..."before"...and decided to work together in this way in this life.

Someone else who knew Monroe was John Harvey Gray, who teaches Reiki learned from one of the original teachers. I think Gray teaches some hemi-sync stuff he got from Monroe (New Hampshire).

Or is the world just that small?

I love the eyes and carriage of the lion. so dignified, self possessed and calm. the eyes seem to possess ageless wisdom which says I dont take guff, so don't mess with me, so it garners immediate respect. you don't ask a lion questions. it asks you questions, but doesn't care if you provide answers.  :)
it strikes me as the best totem of all to have Jean.

once as a small child I had my first what I thought was a nightmare. a white panther jumped inside me after stalking up to my bed. hmm. have to think some more on that too.

it does seem a small world after all as Disney says, when you start thinking globally. I thought it was beyond coincidence when I had my first retrieval from reading Monroe in the 80's, but I had read him in the 70's too, and couldn't find another book to compare with his so re-read it. then along about 2000 found Bruce here who knew Monroe. seemed like divine providence rather than luck.

we gotta be working it in the ethers..thats the only answer.

hugs, alysia

Hi Lucy,

I just looked in my New Land Community pamphlet and see that Joe and Karen Pearce do live there. I don't think I ever met them though while living there for 2 years.

Lucy,

I read in the last chapter of the Carl Rogers Reader about Rogers meeting Monroe when he visited the Monroe Institute when he was quite elderly.  For me it meant the closure of a circle, my 3 main people linked together.

Love. Jean  :-*

Alysia,

Made it through my first day back to work, Mac was right, I needed to be with the people.  Fortunatly I'm still in a slow recovery enough to stand firm on taking things more slowly and in my stride.  Attitude change may be happening because I'm just too dang'd tired and weak to do otherwise.  The day went in slow motion yet much was accomplished including a lunch out at a new restaurant.  I feel more recepitive than ever to going with the flow while continuing to do required tasks.

Yes, we are still running along paraellel // lines in many of our lifes learnings-we gotta' be meeting.  I do like the idea of a white panther and I wonder if yours is still around or have you changed totems?

Love, Jean  :-*

actually Jean, I don't know about  being a white panther :-/  I'm as friendly and trusting as a big drooling clumsy dog, so whatever.. :D

my daughter wishes i was different...I think she is like a grizzly bear, and the other twin is like a kitten. lol...are we having fun yet?

glad to hear you made it thru a work day. I especially like the new restaurant idea. I would wear my new hat if I came with you. love, alysia
