I was walking to the store today and saw an old lady packing her groceries who needed help with her bags. So I walked over to her next to her car in the store parking lot, and I said "you need help with those!?" and I took the bags from her arms. She jumped back scared after I grabbed her bags, we struggled back and forth with the bags (like I was a robber or something), she dropped her groceries, and we both heard her stuff inside the bags break after they hit the ground. After her bags hit the ground, she said "you God damn imbecile, I didn't need any help!" I told her I'm sorry, left her bags on the ground, and I went into the store and started shopping.

I find being called an imbecile offensive.

could I apologize for the old lady, being one? She possibly has been shut in watching the tellie and taking in all its fear-mongering, so she wasn't fully reacting to you but to her fears.
You are not an imbecile (egads, you even spelled it right, I think!)  Misunderstandings of good intentions  are definitely so offensive!
Please forgive her and let it fade away.

Maybe you should have let her answer you first before you took the groceries. Once she started fighting over them, you should have stopped. She had no way of knowing whether or not you were out to rob her or something. Being a good samaritan is great, but make sure that the person wants help and don't just go ahead and do it. A lesson learned (hopefully) by you.
