I have been trying to contact my husband who died not long ago.  In the past two days these things have happened:

There was a distinct smell of stale cigarettes in the hallway.  A friend of mine had brought over some food and smelled it.  Then called me into the hallway and it was very strong.  Michael smoked only out side he is only person I know who smokes.  

I was trying to get on to amazon.com and I kept getting this message:
message_die() was called multiple times. This isn't supposed to happen. Was message_die() used in page_tail.php?  

My husband was in IT.  I asked a friend in IT and he said it could be just a bug.  Once I copied what it was saying I was able to get into amazon.

The car locks itself 3 times while in the garage.  All 3 remotes were sitting in car with nothing touching them.  I was outside the car at the time.

The dog started whining from across the room.  When she was called and came, she smelled of cigarettes.

I can't tell if it's my mind(which is very possible) or if Michael is trying to make contact.  I keep trying to make contact with him.

This sounds like real contact to me.  If you are new to the website, I would look in Bruce's free article section about how to do a retrieval.  My gut feeling is that it is real, but that your husband may be trying to stay with you rather than pass on.  Here, a retrieval may be of help.

I believe that our consciousness exists before and after we are incarnate.  It must be very difficult to communicate though, and I do wish you the best with it.  

The gateway series from the Monroe Institute or Bruce's homestudy tapes on this site might also be of help here.

Technically it is partly "in your mind" because you are noticing these things using your senses and your mind.  That doesn't make them less real.  In addition to other suggestions here, you might want to keep a little journal of the events and how they made you feel and why you felt they may be more than random coincidence.  I've done this before and you might discover just how real they are when you capture them.  I find the details slip from my memory easily if I don't write them down.   At the very least, you may want to ponder the signs 20 years from now, or share it with a family member, and you'll have a nice record.  

I look for what else is going on when the odd event happens.  Does it correspond to some other sign, event, time, or feeling?  Some signs I would not have noticed had they not coincided with other events.  Often these involve very personal feelings, which makes them tough to explain to someone without feeling a bit awkward.  I don't bother.  I concentrate on what it felt like and what it meant to me.  Trust yourself.
