Title: Good and Evil
Post by Spitfire on Jul 6th, 2005 at 1:57pm
Reading around the forum, there seems to be alot of heaven/hell - good/evil things going on recently, the thing i have a hard time understanding is why people can say there one or the other, when these are constantly being redefined.

Peoples views change depending on the situation/the way they were raised, belifs etc.

During world war two, for example, if the allies killed 500 nazi's this is a "good" thing, but for the 500 people, and the rest of the nazi's this would be a "bad" thing, so whos to deside which is good and which is bad? or is it just a case of whichever side has the most people with the same views win?

Even if you look at today and compare it to when the bible was written (I am not a christian, nor do i believe in god btw) the standards for what is "good" and what is evil are greatly different.

I dont know how a christian can be a vegitarian, when god ask's people to slaughter animals for his amusement.

A mass murderer could bomb a school, most people would think this is evil, yet god killed all the eygption children, while they slept, just to make a point to there parents......would this not be considered evil?.

what people used to call "evil" and what they used to call "good" are constantly changing...

what used to be considered good, is now considered evil and visa verse, so for a non christian/ non religous person, how do you truely know what good is?, we have been programmed to think what good/bad is, but as time goes by these change,

i want to know how we can truely find out what good/evil is? or even if there is such a thing, and not just what we have been taught to carry out.

All judgments are subjective.  Totally dependant on the person doing the judging.  Almost everyone does this to some extent.

The perceived problem occurs when your judgment conflicts with that of others.  If everyone had the same beliefs and behaviors, there would be no perceived problem.  Everyone would be RIGHT!

Problem is…everyone thinks that HE is right and therefore  everyone else is wrong.

I also do not define myself as Christian, but I do agree with  “ Judge  not lest you be judged“

Hi Spitfire,

That is a really good question,  and those are good examples of how the time a person is born in, culture, race, religion, sex, and social customs can alter that is "right" or "wrong"   I do agree that these standards of right or wrong good or evil change depending on the above factors.

I think the only measuring stick one can use is your own judgement in regards to whether or not you are acting out of love or fear because what people call good and evil will always change with time and place, but acts motivated by love and acts motivated by fear are constant to all times past present and future.

Hi Spitfire-
Bluejasm has it right. Good and evil are in the eye of the beholder, and the beholder metes out whatever punishment or reward seems appropriate.

However, some things work and some things don't. This is cause and effect, not good and evil. For example, it seems obviuous that making war is unlikely to create peace. That's why Jesus' counsel was to "turn the other cheek", so that we absorb the negative stuff rather than add to it. On the other hand, it doesn't hurt to move the other cheek out of reach of further smiting.

I consider good and evil concepts to be what we call a duality world; we must have rain to be able to appreciate the sun, we must have contrast or things would be quite dull; the trick is to balance everything and be continually weighing the pros and cons instead of merely placing labels of absolution on everything and simply getting pissed off when something doesn't happen according to our vision or judgment. this process of getting in balance, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, is what this board is all about and the process speeds up during this time in history. coming to understanding each other speeds up; there will be less hopelessness that way as your frequency quickens into balance and your mind expands and your heart opens to life, not death. we have been worshipping death too long here. we do not need to define good and evil anymore, accept it or reject it; we only need to listen to the heartbeat of life and allow grace to evolve. unmerited favor will bowl us over. enjoy it while you can, it's over so swiftly. love, alysia
