I can remember stepping outside of my body, I was wide awake. Not asleep.
have awoken out of my sleep feeling like I'm gasping for air as if I were not breathing.

Greetings eggshellseas,
Right!  Getting out of the body takes alot of energy! You may have been out and not known it when you woke up gasping for breath.
If you're going to be doing this accidentally, you might want to consider studying it abit so you are ready for these experiences.
Bruce Moen and Monroe, probably all the spiritual traditions, include extra breathing as part of any preparation for leaving your body.
Enjoy your spiritual development!

I have thought of studying the subject. I heard Sylvia Brown say that before that you wake up choking or gasping becuase of astro travel. I never understood why I may have done that before she spoke about it, what about when your awake, like I mentioned is that possible?

Yes, it's very possible to go OBE while awake or consciously. I've never done it consciously but we all go OBE during the night in our sleep. We are multidimensional beings and we do a lot of work and learning while sleeping. It sounds like you need to do some studying about this subject.  Have a happy journey. Wink
